Overview :
Mission Gaganyaan is about sending crew members into space and safely land them to the earth. The Mission is of Seven days. It is operated by ISRO and manufactred by HAL (Hindustan Aeronautics Limited) and ISRO. The deveopment of mission was started in 2006 and expected to be launched in 2021. After this Mission, India will become fourth country to send a man to space.

ISRO has designed a new test vehicle for crew escape system testing. According to ISRO chairman K. Sivan, "crew escape system is very important aspect of the Mission GAGANYAAN. Many tests like Pad Abort Test (PAT) have been included too.
Reliability:
According to VSSC director Mr. S. Somnath, target for reliability for human rated launch vehicle is 0.99 whereas for crew escape system the targeted reliability is greater than 0.998.
Fast Facts:
- PM Narendra Modi set 2022 as the deadline for the launch of this mission. He stated it in his Independence Day Speech.
- Total three countries has worked in sending man in space. USSR, US & China.
- Currently two countries India & Denmark are working for their first manned mission to space.
- Two unmanned Gaganyaan missions will be undertaken before the Manned Mission.
- GSLV MK-III which is a three stage heavy lift vehicle will be used for the launch.
- The Gaganyaan Mission is estimated to be completed in 9000 crore
- The spacecraft of gaganyaan mission will be placed in low earth orbit of 300-400 km.
- The crew will spend 7 earth days in space.
- Take off is expected to take 16 minutes and the return journey to take 36 minutes.
